Edmonton radio station Sonic 102.9 presented the Summer Tent Event, which showcased Hail the Villain, Gob and Bif Naked, on July 23.

Bif’s New Album Recorded during Chemotherapy

About a year and a half after beginning her treatment for breast cancer, Vancouver native Bif Naked is promoting her sixth album, The Promise.

Although it was recorded during chemotherapy and the album’s first single is entitled “Sick,” the album is not about Bif’s battle with cancer. Bif told Canoe.ca she wanted to release an album in 2009 even before she was diagnosed and she wasn't going to let chemotherapy get in the way of her goal. The title, The Promise, reflects her determination to do the album. The disc was released May 5.

First Tour since Her Battle with Cancer

Wearing a short black skirt, black nylons and black tank top, showing off her many tattoos and sporting a new haircut, Bif Naked took the stage and immediately reminded the crowd that she is the Queen of Canadian rock music. In the parking lot of the Bank Ultra Lounge, under a white tent filled with hundreds of fans, Bif danced and jumped around the stage and maintained, even exceeded, her usual explosive, energetic style.

Bif Naked’s new album is much deeper than any of her past albums. There is an incredible mix of rock, metal, techno and pop, bought out by the many influences and experiences she has faced over the last few years. After getting married and, shortly afterwards, finding out she has cancer, Bif has truly pulled off an amazing feat and proved her dedication to herself and her fans. It is easy to tell that Bif is genuinely sincere in her appreciation in lifer, her music and her fans.

With the introduction of each song, new and old, came cute little descriptions or insights behind the story. Bif has always been genuine and honest about where her lyrics come from and her albums are better because of this.

The Promise is a lot less ‘poppy’ than past Bif Naked albums and shows the more angst ridden side of the artist. But she did mix up the set enough to include past hits like “I Love Myself Today,” “Moment of Weakness” and of course, “Spaceman.”

Gob Gets Added to the Bill

Gob, the Canadian punk rockers, joined the tour last minute and warmed up the crowd before Bif Naked appeared. They were the perfect band to keep the audience at bay as they took their fans on a trip down memory lane when Gob was a staple in the Canadian punk rock scene. They are still just as energetic as they were a decade ago and left the audience singing and screaming along with their hits like “I Hear You Calling” and “Give Up the Grudge.”

All in all, the show was a huge success, leaving the audience wanting more after the long-anticipated return of Bif Naked.
