Sunny Day Real Estate's original members reunite for a U.S. tour and album release.

After enduring internal tensions, two breakups, and over ten years without playing together, rock band Sunny Day Real Estate reunites. The group’s four original members will set out on a twenty-date U.S. tour, which will coincide with the release of two remastered albums.

Sunny Day Real Estate’s Troubled History

Originally formed in Seattle in 1992, Sunny Day Real Estate was never a rock band which enjoyed a traditional main stream following.

The band originally consisted of Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar), Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals), William Goldsmith (drums), and Nate Mendel (bass).

The band’s debut album, Diary, was released on Sub Pop Records in 1994 and became the seventh best selling album in company history. While recording its follow up, however, Sunny Day Real Estate imploded and the members went their separate ways. Enigk began a solo career, and Goldsmith and Mendel went on to join Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters.

Goldsmith left the Foo Fighters shortly after, however, due to a dispute with Grohl during the recording of the band's second release, The Colour and the Shape. According to the post "Artist Biography - Foo Fighters" on Billboard.com, "Goldsmith left the band due to creative tensions, leaving Grohl to drum on the majority of the album."

After their breakup, Sunny Day Real Estate's record label released the group's second album, commonly called LP2 or The Pink Album due to its all pink cover. In 1997, the band re-formed without Mendel, who decided to continue playing with the Foo Fighters. The group went on to release two more albums together before breaking up again in 2001.

Sunny Day Real Estate Reunites … Again!

The band recently announced that its original members will reunite to perform twenty U.S. shows this fall. In addition, Sub Pop Records will release remastered versions of Diary and LP2 to coincide with the tour.

According to the Sub Pop website, “Both remastered albums will include rare bonus tracks as well as newly written liner notes, and will be released on CD and LP.”

The tour will begin on Sept. 17, 2009, in Vancouver, Canada, and will wrap on Oct. 16, 2009, with a home town performance at Seattle’s Paramount Theater.

Mendel, who recently played an Independence Day show at the White House with the Foo Fighters, explains, “I wasn’t around for the second version of the band [Sunny Day Real Estate] that recorded the third and fourth albums, so I’ve always had a feeling of unfinished business there.”

Given the band’s tumultuous history, fans should catch them live before it’s too late!
